Keep a Right to Rent check record

Link each adult’s actual check and supporting evidence to the correct person.

Guide reviewed 2026-10-03 · England residential lettings

  1. Start with every adult

Add all adult occupiers, including people not named on the agreement. Use the applicable official checking process for each person, without discrimination based on nationality.

  2. Carry out the actual check

Use the appropriate Home Office online, permitted manual or eligible digital route. The CRM records the outcome and evidence; it does not verify immigration status or perform the official check.

  3. Save evidence securely

Open the Right to Rent record form, choose the property and occupier, record the route, actual check date, checker, result and evidence. Upload copies/results privately; these records are restricted from landlords.

    Open Compliance →
  4. Track follow-up

Record follow-up deadlines for time-limited rights and add a task. Review official guidance on timing and retention for the person’s circumstances.
